Jessup Man Who Served Time For Past Robberies Faces New Charges: Prince George's Police

A Jessup man previously sentenced to 50 years in prison who was released early has been arrested in connection to 4 recent robberies.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — A 40-year-old Jessup man has been arrested in connection with four armed robberies and attempted armed robberies at area businesses.

In each of the incidents below, James Kareen Day demanded money at gunpoint, according to the Prince George's County Police Department:

  • Feb. 12, 2023: attempted armed robbery of business in the 3600 block of Branch Avenue, Temple Hills
  • Feb. 5, 2023: armed robbery of business in the 4700 block of Allentown Road, Suitland
  • Feb. 4, 2023: attempted armed robbery of business in the 5400 block of Silver Hill Road, District Heights
  • Dec. 23, 2022: armed robbery of business in the 4900 block of Silver Hill Road, Suitland

According to Maryland court documents, Day was convicted in the Circuit Court for Montgomery County on Dec. 10, 2008, of first-degree burglary, robbery, and conspiracy to commit robbery. He was sentenced to 50 years in prison. However, according to court documents, Day unsuccessfully appealed his sentencing afterward. Seven years later after his sentencing, Day petitioned for postconviction relief, which is a procedure that allows the defendant in a criminal case to bring more evidence or raise additional issues in a case after a judgment has been made (post-trial).

Day argued that his trial counsel provided ineffective assistance of counsel by failing to file a motion for modification of sentence pursuant to Maryland Rule 4345(e) when he had supposedly asked trial counsel to do so. The circuit court denied postconviction relief but the Court of Special Appeals turned around and allowed Day to file a belated motion for his sentence to be modified. Patch could not determine from court documents when he was released early from prison.
