Hundreds of cancer survivors, caregivers, family members and other community residents in Calvert County will dedicate themselves to fighting cancer by going around the clock at Relay For Life at Hallowing Point Park in Prince Frederick.  These devoted American Cancer Society volunteers have spent months promoting community participation and fundraising for this event that “Celebrates, Remembers and Fights Back!” and guarantees an inspiring, moving, yet fun-filled experience.

This year’s theme is “Rock Out a Cure and Roll Out Cancer.”  Since 1946, the American Cancer Society has invested $3.9 billion dollars in cancer research and has been part of almost every major cancer breakthrough in the last century.  The Society has funded 47 Nobel Prize winners!

Because cancer never sleeps, Relay teams take turns walking a track all night. Activities include games, food and entertainment.  After sundown, a touching Luminaria Ceremony honors cancer survivors and remembers those lost to the disease.  Participants circle a track surrounded by glowing luminaria bearing the names of loved ones who have battled cancer. Luminaria may be purchased by anyone for just $10.  Relay For Life goes overnight until Saturday morning with the closing ceremony at 6 a.m.

Funds raised by Relay For Life support the Society’s mission to bring an end to cancer and fund cutting-edge cancer research, as well as to provide services for cancer patients and their families, including Reach to Recovery, Road to Recovery, Look Good, Feel Better, Hope Lodge and a 24/7 Call Center at 1-800-ACS-2345.

Annually across the country, 4 million people come together to participate in Relay For Life events.  Please join them and help finish the fight against cancer!

Relay For Life was created in 1985 by Dr. Gordon Klatt, a cancer physician in Takoma, Washington, who now has cancer himself.  He walked a track for 24 hours and raised funds for the Society.  Now, Relay For Life events take place in more than 5,000 communities in the U.S. with approximately 4 million participants raising millions of dollars to help defeat cancer.  The Society is celebrating our 100th birthday this year and invites the community to help finish the fight in this century by joining a Relay For Life in your community.
