Residents Beware: Scammers Calling People Pretending To Be Prince George's Police Officers

Residents are being warned by Prince George's Police that scammers are impersonating officers and threatening arrests if fines aren't paid.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — The Prince George's County Sheriff's Office has been notified by citizens that they've been receiving calls from scammers using the sheriff's office's internal phone numbers. They're claiming to be from the sheriff's office and telling residents there are "outstanding warrants for them and they need to pay the fine or else they'll end up in jail."

"Do not give out personal information such as social security number, name and date of birth to confirm anything," the sheriff's office advised in a notice online. "There are no circumstances under which the sheriff or any other law enforcement agency asks citizens to wire money or send money on a pre-paid card. These calls are from crooks and predators."

The sheriff's office said residents should ask for a name and identification number if someone calls them claiming to be from the sheriff's office.
