Scooter Operator Killed After Hitting Semi On I-495: Police

A scooter operator was killed after hitting a semi on I-495, police said. The vehicle has a maximum speed of 35 mph.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — The driver of a scooter was killed when it collided with a tractor-trailer on I-495 near the Baltimore Washington Parkway in Prince George's County last week.

Maryland State Police said the driver of a Kawasaki 50cc Scooter Wolf, similar to a Vespa, hit the side of a tractor trailer while heading southbound on the Beltway at Maryland Route 295, just south of Greenbelt, reported WMAR.

The scooter has a maximum speed of 35 mph, according to the manufacturer’s website, and officials said that vehicle classification type is not allowed on the Beltway.

The crash investigation initially closed all but the right lane, which got past on the right shoulder, leading to five miles of stop-and-go traffic slowing traffic on the Inner Loop through College Park and Greenbelt, reported WTOP.
