Smoke Fills High Rise From Trash Chute Fire: Prince George's County Official

Smoke damaged upper levels of a high-rise apartment in Prince George's County after a fire broke out in a trash chute.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — Several floors of a high-rise apartment in College Park filled with smoke Tuesday morning after a fire ignited in the building's trash chute.

Emergency workers were called to the 9300 block of Cherry Hill Road shortly after 3:15 a.m. for the report of the fire. Residents were told to shelter in place after firefighters called for a second alarm at the 11-story building.

Officials say the fire in the trash chute was quickly put out but many of the units on the seventh floor and higher experienced some level of smoke damage. The building had to be ventilated and no injuries were reported.
