Carjacking Suspect Aims Gun At Undercover Cop Who Fires Duty Weapon: Police
A carjacking suspect aimed his gun at an undercover detective who was sitting in his vehicle. The detective fired shots, police say.
PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — Late Monday night, shots were fired between a Prince George's Police detective and the suspect behind the wheel of a vehicle that had been reported stolen and used in two carjackings. No one was injured in the shooting.
The Prince George's police detective was sitting in an unmarked vehicle in the area of Oxon Run Drive and Anvil Lane in Temple Hills shortly before midnight when the detective saw a white Kia sedan roll by that had been reported stolen; it also had been used in two carjackings. That Kia was followed by another Kia that also had been reported stolen, the police department reported.
The detective requested additional officers and the police department's helicopter Guardian. He parked his unmarked vehicle behind an unoccupied vehicle on Oxon Run Drive and as he sat waiting for back-up, both Kias pulled up alongside the driver's side of the detective's vehicle. A passenger in the white Kia got out and walked toward the detective's car, pointing a handgun at him, according to the Prince George's County Police.

The detective then fired multiple shots through the windshield toward the gunman who wasn't hit. The suspect ran back to his Kia and both Kias took off. Officers chased the vehicles, which ended in Washington, D.C. Several passengers took off running from the Kias but officers were able to apprehend 24-year-old Charles Edward Owens of Washington, D.C., and a 16-year-old boy also from Washington, D.C. A loaded handgun was found near Owens. The teen has been charged as an adult, police reported.
Owens has been charged with attempted armed carjacking, first-degree assault and related offenses. The 16-year-old suspect has been charged as an adult with attempted armed carjacking, first-degree assault and related offenses.

The Internal Affairs Division’s Special Investigation Response Team will investigate the actions of the involved officer who is a 16-year veteran of the Prince George’s County Police Department and assigned to the Bureau of Investigation and Forensic Science. He is on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
