Comets Best Parkville to Complete Perfect Season

Catonsville defeats the Knights, 28-16, to seal a 10-0 regular season and the school's first county championship.

Saturday’s game against Parkville was far from pretty, but the Comets regular season record is as attractive as it gets.

Running back DeAndre’ Lane and fullback Julian Singletary rushed for 378 yards and a touchdown apiece on 44 combined carries and the Comets defense snared a total of five interceptions as Catonsville topped Parkville 28-16 for the first undefeated (10-0) season—and first Baltimore County Championship—in the school’s history.

“Obviously this is a team that’s going to live forever,” head coach Rich Hambor said.  “I told them today that they’re the first team that ever did this and that’s never going to change, regardless.

“I’m just super proud of all of them because they worked so hard and were so confident. I want them to appreciate this and not look past it even though we have other goals in mind.”

Those goals include advancing in the Class 4A playoffs where the Comets will host a 9-1 Paint Branch squad out of Montgomery County on Friday night.

With a win, Catonsville would take on the winner of Poly and Perry Hall (who the Comets defeated earlier in the season) for the 4A North championship.

Tied at 14 at the half and struggling to gain yards through the air on offense, the Comets reverted back to what Hambor dubbed “old school Catonsville football”—methodically driving the field for scores—in the final two quarters. A Singletary touchdown from 35 yards out gave the Comets the lead and Josh Hylton’s one-yard score later in the third period helped seal the win.

While Hambor wants his team to enjoy and appreciate what they’ve accomplished, he also knows they’ll be able to shift gears come the beginning of the week and focus on what they can potentially achieve.

Racking up just over 38 points per game, Catonsville has outscored opponents 382 to 111 this year and won its games by an average of 27 points.

“It’s something special,” Hambor said of his squads stellar run. “There’s no reason we can’t be playing for another three or four weeks if they want to.”
