4-Year-Old in Body Cast from Bike Path Crash: Police

The Howard County Police Department is asking for help identifying the bicyclist who hit child on path near Lake Elkhorn.

COLUMBIA, MD – A 4-year-old girl is in a body cast after being hit by a bicyclist near Lake Elkhorn, according to the Howard County Police Department, which is asking for help identifying the biker.

At approximately 2 p.m. on Monday, March 28, the girl was walking with a parent near the 7500 block of Broken Staff when a bicyclist rang his bell and despite the child moving out of the way, she and the bike collided at the edge of the path, police reported.

"The bicyclist, who was an unknown white or Hispanic male wearing all red clothing, stopped and asked if the child was alright, but then continued on his way," the Howard County Police Department said in a statement Thursday. "Officers searched the area, but did not locate him. There are no additional confirmed details about his appearance. He may have been riding a red bicycle."

The child was taken to the hospital with serious injuries and was in stable condition, according to police. Officials said Thursday that the girl was in a body cast.

A private donor is putting up a $1,000 reward for information about the bicyclist, police said.
