1. Proposed Apartments Would Replace Aging Building In Columbia (patch.com) — Columbia residents may soon see a major change at Fall River Terrace, where a new four-story, 76-unit apartment building and nearby townhomes are planned to replace aging 1970s-era structures in Harper's Choice. The nonprofit developer promises energy-efficient systems, EV charging, and improved accessibility, aligning with Howard County's push to increase residential density and address the local housing shortage.
2. Working to Keep Your Brain Sharp and Strong (aarp.org) — AARP Maryland's Brain Health Week will kick off in Columbia with a free "Walk with a Doc" around Lake Kittamaqundi near the Mall in Columbia, open to all ages and nonmembers. Throughout Oct. 10–16, residents can join pickleball, yoga, art workshops, museum tours, and talks on sleep, stress, and cognitive fitness, plus access online brain-health resources.
3. From survival to surgery: Doctor from Fresno makes career out of helping others (yourcentralvalley.com) — A Fresno-raised surgeon who once struggled with crime and instability now leads the surgery department at Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center in Columbia.
