Basketball Players Land at BWI After Snowstorm

BWI is back in business.

The Baltimore-Washington Thurgood Marshall International Airport (BWI) was the first airport to open in the region Sunday and welcomed professional athletes among its arriving passengers, the Maryland Department of Transportation reported.

The Boston Celtics, who are playing the Washington Wizards Monday night at the Verizon Center, switched up their travel plans and landed at BWI on Sunday, according to state transportation officials.

Dulles and Reagan airports were closed Sunday.

The NBA stars weren’t the only players landing in the Baltimore area. “The University of Maryland’s men’s basketball team also will be flying in tonight,” transportation officials reported Sunday.

On Monday, BWI remains in the process of ramping up to normal operations and encourages travelers to check with their airlines for flight status information.

BWI was closed from Friday night to Sunday afternoon for the snowstorm, which dropped more than 29 inches at the airport and set a record for snow, according to preliminary reports.

The last flight before the storm departed BWI at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Friday, bound for Heathrow.

The first flight post-storm arrived at 4 p.m. Sunday, according to BWI officials.

As it builds back to normal operations, BWI is offering airport employees a free ride to work Monday from Baltimore City on shuttle buses, running hourly from 4 a.m. to 8 a.m.

Dulles and Reagan will begin offering limited service Monday.
