Central Library Branch in Columbia Reopening This Weekend

After renovations, the Howard County Public Library will reopen on Nov. 5.

COLUMBIA, MD - The Central Branch of the Howard County Library will reopen this weekend after a months-long renovation process.

The library closed in April for updates, which the community is invited to see firsthand on Saturday, Nov. 5, at the grand reopening.

New to visitors will be a customer service and research desk greeting guests as well as a STEM classroom with 60 seats. The library also features expanded instruction and meeting spaces plus aesthetic updates like new carpet, tile and furnishings.

What first prompted the closure was the need to replace the HVAC system and make structural repairs to the 35-year-old facility, The Baltimore Sun reported, and the $900,000 in renovations - funded by Howard County and the state of Maryland - followed since the building would be closing for work anyway.

The grand reopening for the library will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5.
