Columbia Mom Charged With Murdering Newborn Released From Jail

A 38-year-old Columbia mom charged with murdering her newborn son in November 2018 has posted bail and been released from jail.

COLUMBIA, MD — The Columbia mom charged with murder in the death of her newborn son has been released on bond. Moira Akers, 38, originally was held without bond at the Howard County Detention Center after being arrested April 24 at her home in the 7300 block of Carved Stone. Her bail was set at $150,000 and Akers posted it Tuesday, Aug. 20.

Akers was indicted in May on charges of first- and second-degree murder, and child abuse resulting in death. Her court day is scheduled for Oct. 1.

In 2018, Akers was transported to Howard County General Hospital after giving birth at her home. According to authorities, her infant son was found deceased by police in a zipped plastic bag hidden under blankets in a closet in Akers' home Nov. 1, 2018.

An autopsy conducted by the office of the chief medical examiner determined the infant's death was a homicide caused by asphyxiation and exposure, Patch reported. The Howard County Police Department confirmed that the baby boy was full-term and alive at birth.
