Columbia Rescue Provides Home for Bunnies
Friends of Rabbits is looking after more than three dozen bunnies that were given up by their owners.

For some, Easter brought with it the gift of a real, live bunny, which often turns out to be more of a commitment than expected—and that’s where one special rescue comes in.
Susan Wong, who cofounded the Friends of Rabbits rescue in Columbia, said: “They’re usually well loved for quite a few months” and “the next thing you know, they become inconvenient.”

People may not realize that if rabbits are not spayed or neutered, they can develop behavioral issues, Wong said.
After dogs and cats, rabbits are the most commonly surrendered animals to shelters, according to the Humane Society. The Columbia rescue is one of several in the Friends of Rabbits organization; other volunteers help out at different locations in the region.

Wong and Cathy Siu currently have 40 rabbits living with them in every room of their Columbia house.
“They are living, breathing animals that need commitment, and they need care,” Siu said.
