Community Foundation of Howard County appoints six to board

Community Foundation of Howard County raises, manages and distributes funds to support Howard County nonprofits

The Community Foundation of Howard County, which raises, manages and distributes funds to support Howard County nonprofits and provides customized donor services to promote and facilitate philanthropy, appointed six new board members.

Tara Brummell has 15 years of banking industry experience, including private banking relationship management as well as commercial real estate, community development lending and underwriting experience. Brummell is a private client manager and senior vice-president with U.S. Trust, Bank of America Private Wealth Management. She works on a team of specialists who focus on achieving financial objectives for high net-worth clients.

Brummell serves the Community Foundation of Howard County on the Grant Review Committee. In addition, she is a member of the Business Women’s Network of Howard County.

Brummell earned her Masters of Business Administration in finance from Johns Hopkins University and a Bachelor of Science in business administration with an economics track, summa cum laude, from Towson University.

George Doetsch Jr. is the chairman and owner of Apple Ford based in Columbia, Md. Doetsch has served as general partner of Concert Technopolis, a Russian-American business entity franchised Ford dealer, in Chelyabinsk, Russia since 1990. Additionally, he owns Marama Farm Thoroughbred Breeding and Racing Horse Farm, which hosts Howard Community College’s Grand Prix event.

Doetsch serves on the boards of organizations including Howard County General Hospital, the University of Maryland Medical System Shock Trauma Center and the American Heart Association.

Born and raised in Maryland, Doetsch received his Bachelor of Science from the University of Maryland College Park and completed graduate studies at Loyola College.

Charley C. Sung is an attorney with Sung and Hwang LLP. He represents individuals and companies in litigation matters including insurance recovery, collection, personal injury, legal and medical malpractice, breach of contract and construction law. Sung advises clients in business and commercial transactions, and represents both sellers and buyers in business purchase settlements.

Sung began his legal practice in 2001 in the Washington, D.C., office of DLA Piper as an associate in the commercial litigation group. In 2007, he joined the Washington, D.C., office of Gilbert Randolph LLP, where he specialized in insurance recovery litigation.

Sung serves as the president of the Korean American Community Association of Howard County and as a commissioner on the Howard County Ethics Commission.

Spencer Perry is a BB&T commercial real estate account officer. He serves as the bank’s primary contact for a portfolio of commercial real estate developers across all product types, providing acquisition, development and construction financing. Perry also serves as liaison to the bank’s other product line experts such as deposit, insurance and permanent loan specialists.

Perry is registered with NAIOP Maryland, a commercial real estate association, as a developing leader. He earned a master’s degree in real estate from Johns Hopkins University and a bachelor’s degree in economics and marketing from the University of South Carolina.

Brian Eakes is a managing director, head of finance and controller at Legg Mason Inc., a global asset management firm with annual revenues of $2.8 billion and almost $700 billion of client assets under management. He is responsible for Legg Mason’s global finance function, comprising approximately 130 employees in six countries.

Eakes is a member of the board of directors for Maryland Family Network, Center Stage and the Community College of Baltimore County Foundation. He is a graduate of the Greater Baltimore Committee Leadership Program. He received his MBA with honors from Loyola University in Maryland and his bachelor’s degree from Christopher Newport University.

Cynthia Lifson is an attorney and mediator at the Law Offices of Cynthia M. Lifson. She concentrates on matters related to families, providing services in the areas of domestic relations, estates and trusts and small businesses. She has been the legislative counsel to the Maryland Network Against Domestic Violence since 1994. In representing citizens dealing with domestic violence before the Maryland General Assembly, Lifson has been involved in the passage of over 70 statutes affecting Maryland’s civil and criminal laws and rules of procedure in the state courts.

Prior to her admission to the bar, Lifson worked in the District of Columbia as a lobbyist for business interests and as a researcher on international projects related to developing nations. She earned a master’s degree in international relations from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and a bachelor’s degree from Smith College.

The Community Foundation of Howard County, founded in 1969 as The Columbia Foundation, has awarded more than $14 million in grants to Howard County nonprofit organizations delivering human service, arts and cultural, educational and civic programs. Money for the grant programs comes primarily from income generated by the foundation’s endowment supported by more than 300 funds established by Howard County businesses, families and individuals.
