Jackson and Jacksonian Democracy HCC

The election of Andrew Jackson as president of the United States in 1828 marked the emergence of a new kind of politics, that of Jacksonian Democracy. With its emphasis on "the people", it differed from the earlier patrician democracy that characterized American politics from George Washington to John Quincy Adams. However, it was only a stage in the evolution of American democracy and it encompassed a number of contradictions.  President Jackson himself was polarizing figure who was both contentious and controversial. He, as well as Jacksonian Democracy can be best understood by examining some of the issues that were central to his presidency.
