Fire at Oakland Mills Cafeteria Triggered Evacuation: Principal

The fire was ruled accidental and traced to a microwave.

COLUMBIA, MD — Ketchup packets were responsible for the evacuation of Oakland Mill High School on Tuesday morning, according to Principal Kathy Orlando.

After 11 a.m., the school building in the 9400 block of Kilimanjaro Road was cleared out because of a fire in the microwave, Orlando said.

A container of food was being heated up in the cafeteria that had foil ketchup packets inside, which started a fire in the appliance, she reported.

The fire department was called, firefighters removed the microwave and officials gave the all clear.

Nobody was injured in the incident, Orlando said, and school operations continued as usual.
