Fire Displaces 5 People, 1 Dog In Columbia: Officials

A townhouse blaze caused more than $200K in damage off Phelps Luck Drive Thursday afternoon, Howard County fire and rescue officials said.

COLUMBIA, MD — A townhouse blaze off Phelps Luck Drive Thursday displaced five people and a dog, according to the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services.

After 3 p.m., crews responded to the 5400 block of Wild Lilac for a townhouse fire and found "significant fire conditions" on the upper floors of the end-of-group townhome, officials said in a statement.

Five people who lived in the home had evacuated, and a dog was rescued from the basement, according to officials.

Authorities said approximately 45 firefighters brought the blaze under control in 30 minutes. The fire was contained to the top floors and did not spread to the adjacent homes.

There was approximately $250,00 in damage, officials said, and the five people who were displaced were receiving assistance from the Red Cross.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation Thursday evening.
