Howard County MLK Commission Seeks 'Living The Dream' Nominees

Do you know someone who lives or works in HoCo and practices the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.?

From Howard County: The Howard County Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Commission is accepting nominations for the Commission’s annual “Living the Dream” Award. The award recognizes both an outstanding individual and organization (community, civic or religious) that has promoted the teachings and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., through community involvement in Howard County. The award and a $300 cash prize will be presented to the winner at the Commission’s annual celebration on Sunday, January 14, 2018 at Reservoir High School, 11550 Scaggsville Road in Fulton.

To be eligible for this award, nominees must be either residents of or work in Howard County or an organization located in the County; however, volunteer work must have been completed in Howard County. In addition, nominees must have demonstrated the teachings, work ethic and legacy of Dr. King by promoting community involvement among all ethnic groups, regardless of social, economic or religious background, and be committed to non-violence and humanitarian services.

To apply, nominators must submit a typed narrative, 500 words or less, that describes why this individual or organization deserves to win the 2017 “Living the Dream” Award by answering the following:

  1. Describe the nominee’s involvement and type(s) of community participation.
  2. What impact has the nominee had on the community?
  3. Describe the nominee’s achievements and significance contributions.

Additional information pertinent to this award, such as newspaper clippings, articles and other supporting information may be submitted as well. Nominations can be submitted from an individual or organization.

Nomination forms can be obtained by visiting the Commission’s webpage or by calling the Office of Human Rights at 410-313-6430. All completed nomination forms must be postmarked, hand-delivered or emailed by 5:00 p.m., Friday, November 17 to: Howard County Office of Human Rights, Attn: MLK 2017 “Living the Dream” Award, 6751 Columbia Gateway Drive, Suite 239, Columbia, MD 21046, or emailed to SubmissionsMLK@howardcountymd.gov.

The winner will be notified and their name posted on the Commission’s website by January 5, 2018.
