Labor Day was officially recognized by Congress in 1894 as a federal holiday and has been celebrated the first Monday in September to honor all who toil, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
There’s an old-school taboo about not wearing white after Labor Day that Time magazine reports may have to do with the well-heeled wearing white during their summer vacations, then changing back to dark colors when they returned to the sooty city.
