Lockdown Drill At Howard Community College Planned

The community college off Little Patuxent Parkway is planning an emergency exercise on Tuesday, Feb. 20.

COLUMBIA, MD — Howard Community College will be conducting a drill on Tuesday, Feb. 20. Officials with the school in Columbia announced the drill in advance to alert the community.

The purpose of the drill is to test emergency preparedness on campus, according to a statement from Howard Community College.

The college at 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway advises that in the event of a lockdown, an announcement will be made over the PA system as well as through text alerts, code blue emergency phones, building monitors, digital alert clocks and emergency personnel.

Those on campus should avoid open areas during a lockdown and go into a room, preferably one with a lock, and stay there until emergency officials have given the all-clear.

The drill is being held less than a week after 17 people were killed in a high school shooting at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
