More Than 22,000 Without Power in Howard County: BGE

The storm knocked out power, downed trees and caused school roofs to leak, Howard County officials report.

HOWARD COUNTY, MD — Thousands of Howard County residents were in the dark after the storm blew through Tuesday afternoon.

There were 22,719 people without power in Howard County as of 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, according to BGE.

Leaking roofs or power outages were reported at 31 public schools in the Howard County Public School System, County Executive Allan Kittleman said.

Several roads were closed, according to Kittleman, who provided this list of storm-related obstructions around 4 p.m.:

Howard County activated its emergency operations center to monitor the storm, which reportedly knocked down wires and trees with its strong winds and rapid rainfall.

According to unofficial reports from the National Weather Service, multiple large trees fell in Glenelg and Gaither.

Report traffic lights out to Howard County's nonemergency police line at 410-313-2200.

Alert BGE to outages by calling 877-778-2222 or filing a report online.

Weather alerts remain in effect for Howard County Tuesday afternoon and evening.

A flash flood warning is in effect until 5:30 p.m. If there is standing water, authorities advise: "Turn around—don't drown."

Columbia and Elkridge are two places where flooding is likely to occur, according to the National Weather Service.

In addition, Howard County is under a severe thunderstorm watch until 9 p.m.

A tornado warning expired at 2 p.m.
