HOWARD COUNTY, MD — A team of students from Mt. Hebron High School in Howard County Public Schools have won the national championship of the Economics Challenge.
The academic “quiz bowl” competition challenges students to demonstrate knowledge and application of micro and macro economics principles, as well as their knowledge of the world economy.
The team consisting of Mehin Pandya, Joseph Phelps, Satvik Marripalapu and Nathaniel Ritter first won the Maryland State Championship before advancing to the national championship. They beat out nearly 10,000 students to capture the national championship in New York City and earned a $5,000 cash prize. (The story has been updated to reflect the correct prize amount.)
