Pedestrian Injured Crossing Route 175: Police

A Laurel man was at shock trauma Wednesday night after he was hit by a vehicle in Jessup, Howard County police said.

JESSUP, MD — A man was critically injured crossing MD 175 Wednesday night, resulting in the road closure of eastbound lanes for the evening rush hour, police said.

Victor Hugo Vasquez Gonzalez, 41, of Laurel, was hit by a Madza CX-5 at approximately 5:39 p.m. as he tried to cross Route 175 east of Pocomoke Drive, according to police. Preliminarily, authorities attributed the crash to pedestrian error.

Gonzalez was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where officials said he was listed in critical condition.

The Mazda driver — Kelsey A. Schott, 24, of Hanover — stayed at the scene and was not injured, officials reported.

Route 175 east was closed for two hours at Pocomoke Avenue.

PREVIOUS REPORT — A pedestrian was hit on MD 175 on Wednesday evening, the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services reported. Before 6 p.m., officials said that a medevac was on the way to the scene.

The collision involving the pedestrian occurred on Route 175 in the area of Pocomoke Avenue, fire and rescue personnel said. Eastbound Route 175 was shut down for the investigation.

Authorities reported the victim was being taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center.
