When officers arrived, Boitano confronted police with a knife in the driveway and refused to follow orders to drop the weapon, the report said.
One officer fired at Boitano, who was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Officials said there was nobody inside the residence.
“At this stage of the investigation, there is no indication that anyone other than Boitano was present at the residence at the time of the shooting,” police said in a statement.
“Investigators are still working to confirm who made the 911 call,” Howard County Police Department spokeswoman Sherry Llewellyn told Patch.
