Police Kill Man Armed With Knife Outside Apartment Complex: Authorities

The man died at the scene, according to authorities, who said the officers who fired at him were wearing body cameras and were not hurt.

COLUMBIA, MD — A man armed with a knife was fatally shot by police Sunday in Columbia, according to the Maryland attorney general’s office.

Howard County police officers were responding shortly after midnight to a 911 call from a man threatening to hurt himself at an apartment complex in the 6400 block of Freetown Road, authorities said.

“When officers arrived at the complex, they entered the apartment building but did not see the man,” according to a news release from the attorney general’s office.

“Officers then exited the building and saw a man walking toward them from the parking lot with a knife in his hand. Officers issued multiple commands to drop the knife. The man continued to walk toward the officers. Three officers fired their service weapons, striking the man.”

The man died at the scene, according to authorities, who said the officers were wearing body cameras and were not hurt.

The Independent Investigations Division of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General is investigating the shooting, the news release said.
