Howard County Police Officer On Duty Fatally Hits 93-Year-Old In Parking Lot

A police officers is on leave after fatally hitting a 93-year-old woman in a parking lot Friday morning, police report.

COLUMBIA, MD — A Howard County police officer fatally hit a 93-year-old woman in a parking lot Friday morning.

According to the Howard County Police Department, around 6:45 a.m., a police officer not in uniform but who was on duty was driving out of a parking spot in the 6400 block of Dobbie Road (Dobbin Center) in an unmarked police vehicle. The police officer hit the 93-year-old woman with a 2019 GMC Acadia while she was walking in the parking lot.

The woman was taken to University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center where she was later pronounced dead. The officer, who is assigned to the technical support section of the police department, has been placed on standard administrative leave, the police department stated.

The incident is being investigated but investigators do not believe speed was a factor, the police department reported.
