Report: Books-A-Million Deal to Buy Borders Stores Collapses

A liquidation sale is underway.

Books-A-Million, the book-selling chain that had offered to buy as many as 35 bankrupt Borders stores—including the one in Columbia—has dropped its efforts to go through with the deal, sources told the Baltimore Business Journal.

The company’s CEO told the newspaper that the parties could not compromise on the terms of the agreement and the going-out-of-business sales.  

Gordon Brothers Retail Partners and Hilco Retail Resources are running the Borders .

Borders has shuttered hundreds of unprofitable stores after the firm filed for protection under the bankruptcy provisions in mid-February this year.

In its heyday, stores nationally, including those formerly owned by Waldenbooks.
