Second Suspect Charged in Double Shooting: Howard County Police

A Laurel man and Baltimore man are charged in the shooting of two men on Dec. 18 in what may be a drug-related incident, police say.

HOWARD COUNTY, MD — A Prince George's man has been charged as the second suspect in the double shooting that ultimately left a 20-year-old Columbia man deceased, police said.

Derick Charles Johnson, 19, of Hyattsville, is charged with attempted murder, assault and related offenses, according to police. He was being held on $500,000 bond at the Howard County Detention Center.

Johnson was the second of two suspects police allege were involved in the Dec. 18 shooting near Laurel that injured two cousins, one of whom police said later died.

The other suspect _ Davon Phillip Jones, 20, of the 9200 block of Bridle Path Lane — was arrested a week ago and charged with attempted murder, assault and related offenses. He was being held without bond at the Howard County Detention Center.

Officials said that the charges against Johnson and Jones would be amended to include murder since one of the victims — Kaiyon Stanfield, 20, of Columbia — was pronounced deceased at shock trauma late last week.

Stanfield was found shot multiple times in a vehicle in the 9400 block of Woodsong Court when officers responded to a report of gunshots at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 18, police said.

His cousin Khalil Stanfield, 21, of Silver Spring, was close by in the 9300 block of Daly Court with gunshot wounds as well, according to officials.

Khalil Stanfield has been released from shock trauma, where he was treated for his injuries, police said Tuesday.

Drugs were found at the scene, according to officials.
