Howard County Human Rights Commission Seeks Student Volunteer To Serve 1 Year-Term

The Howard County Human Rights Commission seeks student volunteers to serve on the commission for a 1-year term starting July 1.

HOWARD COUNTY, MD — Student volunteers interested in serving a one-year term on Howard County's Human Rights Commission are encouraged to apply for a seat on the commission by the May 22 deadline. The term begins July 1 and ends June 30, 2023.

The commission was established in 1969 and is comprised of 11 voting members who serve three-year terms and one non-voting student member who serves a one year-term. Prescribed by law, the commission’s duties and responsibilities include recommending a civil rights policy to the county executive and the County Council; conducting surveys and studies concerning human rights conditions and problems; and filing a complaint when there is reason to believe a pattern or practice of discrimination exists.

“Volunteers who serve on the Howard County Human Rights Commission have the opportunity to address discrimination, reduce hate and protect and promote human rights throughout our community," Howard County Executive Calvin Ball said. "I know many of our young residents are passionate about finding solutions that improve our community and reflect our shared Howard County values of inclusion, equality and compassion for all. If you want to share your passion and perspective, I encourage you to apply.”
