Student Sought To Serve On Howard County Rec And Parks Board

Applicants should submit a resume and a brief letter explaining why they want to serve on the board by March 20.

HOWARD COUNTY, MD — A high school student interested in serving on the county's recreation and parks advisory board can apply now for the sole spot on the eight-member board that's reserved for students enrolled in a Howard County high school for the 2020-2021 academic year.

The board provides recommendations relating to plans, policies and programs for public recreation, and reviews plans for and holds hearings on the acquisition and development of land for public recreation and open space. The student board member will serve a one-year term from July 1, 2020, to June 30, 2021.

“We remain dedicated to fostering public recreation programs to benefit our residents of all ages and abilities and it is important to have multiple voices on our rec & parks advisory committee,” said Howard County Executive Calvin Ball. “This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to get involved in the planning process for new facilities and programs and I encourage our high school residents who are passionate about sports to apply.”

To be eligible for consideration, candidates must be a Howard County resident, enrolled in high school for the 2020-2021 academic year, have an interest in public recreation and be able to attend the board’s meetings, which are held the third Wednesday of each month from 7 to 9 p.m. in Conference Room #1 at the department of recreation and parks headquarters, 7120 Oakland Mills Road in Columbia.

Applicants should send a resume and a brief letter explaining why they want to serve on the board to: Howard County Government, Office of the County Executive, Attn: Kimberly Pruim, 3430 Court House Drive, Ellicott City, MD 21043. The resume and letter of interest can also be emailed to kpruim@howardcountymd.gov. The names of eligible applicants will be submitted to the county executive for approval and the nominee will be submitted to the County Council for confirmation. The deadline to apply is March 20.
