Suicidal Man Saved By Observant Driver, Howard County Police

A driver noticed a man at the edge of a bridge and called 911. Officers convinced the man to climb back over the barrier and not jump.

HOWARD COUNTY, MD — A driver who saw someone in a precarious position on the Route 40 bridge contacted authorities and is credited with helping to save the person's life. Deejay Pressman saw a man with his jacket off standing in the pouring rain in the center of the westbound span of the Route 40 bridge, both hands placed on the barrier peering over the side of the bridge at the rolling river below, and Pressman was instantly alarmed.

He shared on Facebook that he knew he needed to call 911, then drove back 15 minutes later to try and learn what had happened.

"Pretty sure I saved a life today," Pressman wrote on Facebook. "I'm hoping the guy can get some help."

"The officers arrived and were able to secure him and keep him from jumping. They eventually convinced the man to climb back over the barrier to safety before transporting him to the hospital for an evaluation. Their quick response and expert negotiation skills certainly helped prevent a terrible tragedy. The police department thanks them for their great work," the department shared on Facebook.

"This makes me happy. Good job guys!" he posted.
