Man Convicted In Fatal Shooting Of Columbia Teen (patch.com) — Columbia residents are learning that a Howard County jury has convicted Kennard Mekhi White in the 2023 shooting that killed 18-year-old Columbia teen Jeremiah Isaiah Darden and injured another local man. Prosecutors detailed how surveillance footage, electronic data, forensic evidence and a recovered gun tied White to the Woodpark Lane apartment stairwell shooting, with sentencing set for November.

Neighborhood used as cut-through for Rt. 29 and Broken Land Parkway; Neighbors urge traffic safety upgrades (wmar2news.com) — Allview neighbors in Columbia are pushing Howard County officials for stronger traffic safety measures on streets used as a cut-through between Route 29 and Broken Land Parkway. Residents cite speeding, confusing intersections, and school bus stops as reasons for more signage or a traffic circle, while the county's public works department says current traffic volumes don't yet justify major changes.
   

4. College Student Wins $150K On Ticket Bought At Howard Co. Store (patch.com) — A 20-year-old college student just claimed a $150,000 Powerball prize from a ticket bought at the Harris Teeter on Guilford Road in Columbia. The winner says he only played after seeing the jackpot soar, and now he's dreaming about a vacation and a BMW while figuring out longer-term plans.

Cannabis Industry Workforce Development Conference (maryland.gov) — A statewide Cannabis Industry Workforce Development Conference is coming to the Maryland Innovation Center on Columbia Gateway Drive this October, offering workshops, networking, and on-site interviews. Columbia residents interested in cannabis careers can register by September 30 and meet employers hiring for cultivation, processing, dispensary, and related roles.
