Suspicious Bicyclist Leads to Lockdown at Oakland Mills Schools: Officials

BREAKING: Two schools in Columbia were on modified lockdowns because of a person in the area deemed suspicious.

COLUMBIA, MD — Oakland Mills Middle and High schools were placed on a modified lockdown Friday morning due to a questionable bicyclist, according to school officials.

"..an unfamiliar individual was on the property," according to Oakland Mills Middle School, which said in a statement Friday that authorities were contacted and operations inside the building were continuing as usual.

During modified lockdowns, outside activities are suspended, as all students are to remain inside the building with the exterior doors locked.

Oakland Mills High School joined the modified lockdown as a precautionary measure. The lockdown was lifted Friday afternoon. "Extra police will be in the area during dismissal as a precaution," officials said.

"A suspicious person on a bike was reported by the middle school," Oakland Mills High School administrators said in a message to families Friday morning. A modified lockdown usually occurs in response to violence, criminal activity other other situations that may potentially impact the school site.
