Takedown of Vacant American City Building Begins Today
Office building makes way for redevelopment of Lakefront District in Downtown Columbia
The takedown of the vacant American City Building to make way for redevelopment of the Lakefront District in Downtown Columbia begins May 8.
The takedown of the building will occur over a six-week period in order to accommodate traditional community events that take place along the Lakefront. The building will be taken down by a crane from the top and debris will be hauled away in trucks.
The American City Building is owned by The Howard Hughes Corporation, the master developer for the revitalization of Downtown Columbia. All of the building’s tenants have been relocated. Most recently the Post Office moved to 50 Corporate Center nearby on 10500 Little Patuxent Parkway. As part of the transition, the “Bear and Nursing Cubs” sculpture at the corner of the American City Building will be relocated to a planter area in the sidewalk at Whole Foods Market along with the accompanying plaque listing the names of every employee of The Rouse Company on its 30th anniversary.
