Two Dogs Saved From Burning Home In Columbia: Officials

Howard County rescuers found two frightened dogs during a sweep of a burning Columbia home. They were given oxygen with special pet masks.

COLUMBIA, MD — Two dogs owe their lives to Howard County firefighters and paramedics who found the terrified pets during a search of their owner's home after a fire broke out there just before 9 a.m. Nov. 18. Rescuers from Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services (HCDFRS) were dispatched to the 5500 block of Bluecoat Lane in Columbia for multiple reports of a house fire Monday morning.

Crews found heavy fire on the second floor and shooting through the roof of the home. Crews began attacking the fire from the outside of the structure before advancing inside. Primary searches confirmed there were no residents home when the fire occurred, but two dogs were rescued, treated with oxygen on the scene via pet oxygen masks and transported to a local veterinary facility.

According to the HCDFRS, the dogs were alert and appeared to be doing much better by the time rescuers left the veterinary facility. The American Red Cross is assisting the two adults who lived there.
