Wave of the Future: Multi-Cultural Homeschooling Co-ops

COLUMBIA, MD – Asian, Latino and African-American communities, are increasingly turning their backs on the public-school system.

COLUMBIA, MD – With home-education on the rise, a local homeschooling co-op opens its doors to the public on Friday, March 24th to showcase its enrichment classes, science workshops and Pre-K program. The Howard County Homeschooling Community, known as HCHC, has been educating homeschooling students for the past 3 years and its Directress says, “In today’s changing society, parents want better options than what they’ve been given, and some parents are willing to take matters into their own hands. When that happens, we’re here to help them.”

A larger number of families from Asian, Latino and African-American communities, are increasingly turning their backs on the public-school system and choosing to educate their children at home. “My reasons for leaving are the same as anyone else. I’m discouraged by the lack of discipline, bullying and dispassionate teachers in the system.” says John Remondini, HCHC board member and father of five. Rayna Remondini, the visionary behind the non-profit, partners with local business owners who are also passionate about teaching children and nurturing development. “Organizations are bending over backwards to serve our community because they see the steep increase in numbers. Our presence is noticeable,” she says “but it hasn’t always been that way.”

The Open House event is set to start at 10:00am at the Christ Episcopal Church located at 6800 Oakland Mills Road in Columbia, MD 21045. During the morning, parents are encouraged to join their little ones (ages 2-5) in sensory play, as part of the Leadership Academy’s Montessori-styled Pre-K PALS curriculum.

At 1:00pm the co-op presents a science workshop led by John Walstrum, PhD. from the National Electronics Museum in Linthicum, Maryland. Also scheduled at 1:00pm, children ages 8-14 can engage in a hands-on, papier-mâché, art class that focuses on the importance of problem-solving, critical thinking and emotional intelligence.

Local vendors are on-site to share information about other programs of interest to home-educators. HCHC staff is available to answer questions regarding class enrollment and to explain the group’s mission and teaching philosophies.
