UPDATE: Storm Debris Cleanup Tips

UPDATE (July 11, 3:50 p.m.)—The power is back on and the air conditioning is cranking, but there is still evidence of the June 29 in piles of branches and limbs collected by residents.

The county announced Wednesday afternoon that storm debris removal assistance may be requested through the Office of Community and Constituent Services.

“Some communities were particularly hard hit by the storm,” County Executive John R. Leopold stated in a press release. “Our citizens take great pride in their communities and diligently keep their neighborhoods clean and clear of limbs and branches. We hope this special assistance will help those struggling with their continuous cleanup efforts.”

Larry Schweinsburg of the Crofton Civic Association reached out to Patch and said that some residents are wondering why the county hasn't picked up the piles of debris they've left on the curb for collection.

Schweinsburg said when he called the county's Department of Public Works (DPW), he was advised that the normal regulations regarding such debris removal remain in effect.

Here are the guidelines from the county's website:

• For leaves, grass, brush and branches, you can use plastic 32-gallon or smaller trash bags or a reusable container (not cardboard). Brush and branches must be bundled. Tie bundles securely with twine.
• All bags and containers must be marked with a large "X" visible to the collectors. This will ensure that they know it is recycling and not trash.
• Bags or bundles may not weigh more than 40 pounds each. Tree limbs and branches must be less than 4 feet in length, with a maximum branch diameter of 4 inches.
• Bags must be tied. Do not use wire or metal ties.
• Do not mix trash with yard waste.
• There is no limit to the amount of yard waste you can put out for collection.
• Do not place yard waste in a county-issued yellow container.

According to a press release from the county, logs and large limbs can also be taken to any of the three county convenience centers. For specific questions about yard waste or debris removal, residents may call the DPW at 410-222-6100.
