Swim and Fish Bear Creek/Old Road Bay in 2020

Join the Dundalk Renaissance Corporation at Ruth Harrison’s waterfront home to learn and lend a hand in creating a healthy backyard to support a vibrant watershed.  People indirectly affect the health of the Chesapeake Bay in our everyday actions.  Together we can take simple steps to reduce our impact on the bay and bring back the fish populations to abundance once again. 

Baltimore County has set a goal for a swimmable and fishable harbor by 2020.  The DRC supports this goal by focusing on Bear Creek/Old Road Bay and the quality of water leaving our lands in Dundalk.  Many things affect the waters health including lawn care practices, washing cars inthe road, lacking tree cover, trash in the streets, bacteria from pet poop, or anything going down the drain other than rain.

We have a long way to go toward reaching the 2020 goal and it will take a community making the simple little changes together in order to achieve this.  An easy place to start is in our own backyards.  Rain gardens, native plants, and rain barrels help to reduce rain runoff from carrying heavy metals, bacteria, and nutrient pollution into the streams and creeks leading to the Bay.  If you live on the waterfront, your yard present an immediate opportunity to create and foster habitat for wildlife while acting like a filter to cleanse rain water as it drains to the bay.
