Cash Missing After Armored Truck Opens in Baltimore Harbor Tunnel: Police

Those who took cash after an armored truck spilled its contents in the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel have until 5 p.m. Saturday to return the money—or face theft charges—according to Maryland Transportation Authority Police.

Police said a a door security system malfunctioned in the Brinks armored vehicle, which was headed south in the tunnel at approximately 7 p.m. Wednesday. As a result, bags of cash spilled out, according to WYPR.

Traffic was detoured around the Harbor Tunnel for cleanup until 3:40 a.m. Thursday, the transportation authority reported. While most witnesses cooperated, police said cleanup efforts revealed the not all the cash was recovered.

Police have not disclosed how much cash was missing due to the ongoing nature of the investigation.

The Baltimore City State’s Attorney is offering immunity for anyone who returns the cash by 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 18, to the Maryland Transportation Authority. Contact the authority at 410-537-1208.

“Those who do not take advantage of this offer of immunity will be pursued on charges of theft,” the Maryland Transportation Authority said in a statement.

There are cameras in the tunnel, according to WNEW.
