Dundalk Athlete of the Week: Wrestler Teddy Cadd

Sparrows Point wrestler Teddy Cadd pulled off a huge upset to claim a regional championship.

Sparrows Point wrestler Teddy Cadd was considered a significant underdog by most when he faced off against defending state champion Demetrius Johnson in the 152-pound championship match of last Saturday's 2A/1A North Regional wrestling tournament.

An underdog in everyone's mind, but his own.

“I knew I could catch him with the spladdle,” Cadd said. “I'd been watching him these last couple of weeks and I knew he was susceptible to it.”

The spladdle is a highly risky move when a wrestler allows his opponent to get a deep shot into his legs, and then uses his opponent's own momentum against him to put him on his back with legs in the air.

“I work on it all the time in practice,” said Cadd.

Early in the first period, Cadd indeed caught Johnson in the spladdle, giving him a 5-0 lead.

“I catch it on lesser wrestlers all the time, but this is the first time I've caught a high caliber wrestler in it,” said Cadd. “After that all I had to do was wrestle smart and I knew I would win.”

Cadd pulled off the upset, 6-4, earning him a regional championship as well as Dundalk Athlete of the Week honors.

Today, Cadd will lead a strong contingent of Pointer wrestlers into the 2A/1A Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association’s championships that includes fellow regional champions Shane Hammer (145), and James Krug (182), regional runner-up Nathan Borkowicz (160) and third place finishers Chris Petrovia (106), Randy Watson (120), and Chris Long (138).

Dundalk's Alfred Martinez (126) and Wayne Maddox (265) also advanced to states with regional championships, along with regional runner-up Joe Doetsch (195).

Dundalk Patch will offer extensive coverage of the state tournament this weekend.
