Adoption fees at the Baltimore County Animal Shelter will be waived Oct. 12.

The traditional observation ofย Columbus Dayโ€”you know, the day thatย recognizes when Christopher Columbus may or may not have discovered Americaโ€”will be joined by a furry celebration of the explorer this year in Baltimore County.

Baltimore County Animal Shelter officials have created a "Patriotic Pets" campaign that will be held Oct. 12, the Saturday before the federally-observed holiday on Oct. 14.

Any pet adopted or placed on hold for adoption that day will have its adoption fee waived, according to to a statement from county officials.

The cost of a cat or dog license will still be required at the time of adoption; Baltimore County law requires pets to be licensed and for rabies vaccinations to be kept up to date, according to the statement.
