Photo of the Day: Black Widow in Dundalk
Taking a a closer look at life in and around Dundalk.

Summer is a wonderful time of the year to get out and work in the garden. We plant, weed and water to see all our efforts turn into beautiful flower gardens.
But we need to be careful of the other things that lurk in the gardens. Recently, I found this Black Widow Spider under a pot on my patio. I remember my mother told me about this spider when I was very young. It's amazing how somethings just stick in your memory.
She said if you ever see a black spider with a red, hourglass shape on it's belly, stay away from it because it is poisonous – it's a "Black Widow." It has a very unusual rather ugly web, unlike the normal spider webs we see. The web does not really show in the photo, unfortunately.

This spider was hiding under a pot on my patio, which I am on everyday watering my flowers and sitting enjoying the cool breeze. One day I went out there and a black snake was sunning himself, but by the time I grabbed my camera, he was gone.
I just never know what each day will bring.
