The following are a few tips the department shared so parents and children have a safe and enjoyable Halloween:

  • Plan to have a house Halloween party for your children to avoid their need to be out on Halloween night.
  • If your children go out, take them so that you can supervise their activities.
  • Costumes and masks present additional dangers. Be certain your child is able to see and breathe properly while wearing a mask. Costume length should be such that your child does not trip on it while walking.
  • Pieces of reflector tape on the costume will enhance visibility of your child in the dark hours.
  • Talk with your children about traffic safety. Be sure to cross at corners and never to cross between parked cars.
  • Instruct children not to eat any treats until they have been taken home and inspected.
  • Children should be encouraged to respect other people’s property and should also be reminded to say “thank you” when given a treat.
  • Only visit homes with their lights on.
  • Travel in groups, never alone.
  • Most importantly…BE CAREFUL!! IF you need police assistance dial 9-1-1.
