12 Days of Christmas Gifts: Day One—The Fisherman

We want to help you shop locally.

It seems like saying "Buy Local" has become the in thing to do, but for small businesses in our area, there is nothing new about shopping locally. For the next 12 days, we're going to post an item each day showcasing some of the great businesses in Edgewater and Davidsonville.

Day One: Is there someone in your life who likes to fish? Someone who loves nothing more than spending a day on the bay, then bringing home the catch and serving it up for dinner?

Sometimes on these expeditions, the fishing gods were generous and gave a little more than the family needed. Then neighbors and friends got in on the generosity.

Well, on Mayo Road is the place to go for this kind of a person. We stopped by recently and talked to sales clerk Mike Crow, who had a few ideas to share.

His top idea: the Grelen lure. They range in price from $6 to $12 for different sizes and colors—and you can never have enough of them.

"Anyone who is having success fishing for rockfish in the Chesapeake Bay is dragging Grelens," Crow said.

Most anglers will use multiple poles while fishing, so buying more than one would be a great gift idea. Plus they come in a variety of colors and sizes to make the gift look interesting.

The store also carries the Guy Harvey Collection of Maui Jim sunglasses ($300). These polarized sunglasses cut down on glare and make a day on the bay easier on the eyes.

Finally, Mike suggested a crab pot for steaming crabs in summer and frying up turkeys at Thanksgiving ($100 to $240).

When all else fails, gift cards in any denomination will do.
