17,000-Gallon Sewage Leak Closes South River Cove
Thousands of gallons of sewage spilled into this cove on Saturday after an Annapolis main overflowed.
Annapolis, MD — A 17,000-gallon sewage leak closed Boyd's Cove, located just off the South River. The spill started on Saturday when a 10-inch sewage main on the 200 block of Cape St. John Road overflowed.
The Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works said it prevented 6,000 gallons from reaching the water. The remaining 11,000, however, ran into a storm drain that led straight to Boyd's Cove.
While the Anne Arundel County Department of Health only closed Boyd's Cove, it also posted warning signs at Community Beach, which is also on the South River. The department is sampling the beach's water to see if it is also contaminated.

Anybody who may have touched the contaminated water should immediately take a warm shower with soap, the Anne Arundel County Department of Health advised in its Sunday press release. Swimmers should also wash their clothes, the advisory continued.
Boyd's Cove will be closed until Aug. 1. The cove is situated between the Solomons Island Road and Riva Road bridges.
