HARWOOD, MD — A driver reportedly made a U-turn into the path of an Anne Arundel County Police SUV on its way to a crash in Harwood, authorities say. The accident happened shortly after 3 p.m. Aug. 8 on Solomons Island Road, and sent three people to area hospitals.

Two police officers were responding to a crash with injuries at Solomons Island Road and Mill Swamp Road in Harwood. The officers were southbound on Solomons Island Road in a marked Ford Police Explorer with lights and siren activated, when they came upon traffic that had slowed for the crash ahead. Authorities say the police SUV moved into the northbound lane to pass the slowed traffic when a Nissan Altima that was in the southbound traffic made a U-turn into the path of the police vehicle, resulting in the collision.

Two police officers were taken to Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Nissan — Kendal Marie Chaney, 27, of the 5000 block of Dartmouth Street in Churchton — was taken to Prince George's Hospital Trauma Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

The primary cause of the crash was Chaney making an unsafe U-turn and failing to yield right of way to an oncoming emergency vehicle, police said. Speed, drugs and alcohol are not believed to be a factor in the crash, police said.
