Ask "Decorator Deb"

Helping readers with their questions about decorating and home staging.

Hi everyone!  I hope you are enjoying this beautiful
weather!!  I love helping readers with
their decorating and staging challenges!
This is my third week publicizing my blog and here are some questions that
I’ve received this week:

Q.  I’m trying to get my home ready to sell this
spring.  What things should I think about
in getting my home ready?

A.  In getting homes ready to sell, I think of
the acronym: D- Declutter; D-Depersonalize; C - Clean

The first thing you should tackle
is:  Declutter.  Try to weed out and eliminate, give away or
pack away any extra items that you really don’t need to live each day. Prospective
buyers cannot see the home through a lot of clutter.

The second this is: Depersonalize.  Pack away your very personal items, personal
pictures, for instance. Prospective buyers cannot imagine themselves owning
your home if your personal mark is in the home.

The third thing is:  Clean.
Make sure your home is sparkling clean, from the baseboards to the
ceiling; from the floor to inside the closets and cabinets; to the kitchen and
bathrooms.  Prospective buyers can be “turned
off” to your home if it is not clean and neat.

Q. We recently purchased a split
foyer home and would like to paint the walls our chosen color, green. The
problem is – it’s so much green.  Is
there a way to differentiate the foyer from the rest of the area?

A.  Split foyer homes usually “share” walls with
the foyers.  I’d like to suggest that you
paint one or two walls in the foyer a neutral/complimentary color to the green;
perhaps beige.  Those wall can be “accent
walls” and can separate the space between the foyer and the living area and
highlight the foyer, yet  compliment the
color scheme of the room.

If you have decorating or staging
questions for me, please comment on my blog.
I’ll try to answer at least two questions each week.  I am also happy to come out for a home
consultation if you’d like to contact me.

Until then, happy decorating!
