Over the weekend, we had low tides on the South River combined with strong winds from the northwest which exposed some of the river bottom that we rarely get to see.

The first photo is of the area formerly known as Goose Island, located just off the shore of Glen Isle.  The site is still a popular location for raft ups of boaters in the summer, clearly very shallow even under high tides.

The second photo was taken of the headwaters area between Routes 450 and 50.

Even under high tides, this is an area where it can be difficult to get a kayak into. It's hard to believe that once, not so long ago, tobacco barges were being loaded in this vicinity

A photo of this area taken in the early 20th century [here], well before the construction of the Route 50 bridge, gives some sense of the openness of the area which is now largely crowded by marsh.
