Fall into a Celebration with the South River Federation

Does kayaking with your family sound like fun? Ever wondered how these extreme weather events will affect our area? Read more about the South River Federation's Fall Celebration.

Cooler weather is here and that means it is time to celebrate the arrival of fall!  The South River Federation is gearing up for our annual Fall Federation Celebration which includes a lecture on extreme weather events, a kayak sojourn, and a picnic.  Whether you prefer to be indoors or outdoors this time of year, we have something for you coming up next week!

Have you ever wondered how all of these extreme weather events and climate change may impact our area?  Join us at Londontown Community Hall (170 May Rd Edgewater) at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday October, 16th to learn how.  This presentation by Dr. Emily Becker of NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center will clarify the relationships and differences between weather and climate, as well as the differences between natural climate variability and human-induced climate change.  Dr. Becker will use this background to discuss long-term trends in extreme weather and climate events, including heat waves, droughts, hurricanes, and tornadoes, as well as sea-level rise.  This talk will address the potential effects of climate change and extreme weather on Maryland and the Annapolis area. There will be a discussion following the presentation so bring your questions!

Enjoy the changing colors of the leaves and wildlife along Beards Creek and join us on Saturday, October 20th, 2012 for a kayak trip.  Graciously hosted by Annapolis Landing Homeowners Association, the kayak trip will launch from their community pier.  We will meet at 10:00 a.m. and after enjoying a hot cup of coffee, we will launch and explore the upper areas of Beards Creek, which is not always seen from boat due to the shallowness of the water.  Don’t forget to bring your camera, binoculars, water, and of course a friend—there have been otter sightings from this creek.

This day is all about celebrating the South River, so even if you aren’t able to join us for the kayak trip, we still want to see you.  After the kayak trip, the Federation will host a picnic starting at noon.  There will be plenty of food, so please come out and say hi!  It will be a great opportunity to meet the South River Federation staff and other Federation members who care about the South River.

Please RSVP by Monday, October 15th by calling (410) 224- 3802 or email Sarah at sarah@southriverfederation.net.  If you need to rent a kayak, please call Annapolis Canoe & Kayak at (410) 263-2303 as they are offering discounts on rentals.  We apologize for the inconvenience, but we will not be taking canoe rentals.
