Favorites Spotlight: Edward Scissorhands (1990)
My description of my love of Edward Scissorhands (1990)
I've decided to blog every now and then about some of the films that are closest to my heart, starting with Edward Scissorhands.
I can't remember when I first saw this film, but it obviously wasn't when it was initially released (I wasn't even born yet!). All I know is that I love it immensely, mainly because of its sheer charm and storytelling. It always manages to make me smile every time I watch it. In my opinion Edward Scissorhands is director Tim Burton's best movie, and hands down his best collaboration with Johnny Depp.
Speaking of Depp, he plays the title character brilliantly. The performance is quite subtle, but hilarious in its simplicity. It's one of those great "fish-out-of-water" acting jobs that can be really quite funny. Most of the humor in the movie comes from his character.

The film also has some effective sattire in it pretaining to suburban life. When I was younger I never realized it (considering I didn't know what sattire was at all), but it is pretty dead on. It all fits in well with the charm of the movie. There is also a sweet little love story in here that works well enough.
Bottom line, I love this film so much. It's one of those movies I can appreciate even though it has a pretty short running time and a simple story. In fact, it's simplicity is the reason why it shines so brightly. If you haven't seen Edward Scissorhands, you're missing out. If you want to watch it, it can be found on Netflix instant view now!
